Dr. Hossein Ghadimi, age 95, of Naples, died Sunday, August 27, 2017, at Avow Hospice, Naples Florida. He was a beloved husband and father of five. Dr. Ghadimi had an illustrious career as a dedicated pediatrician, and a highly esteemed and world renowned medical researcher.
Hossein Ghadimi was born May 30, 1922, in the Soviet Union. He emigrated to Iran as a child, and received his medical degree from the University of Tehran. He received residency training under scholarship in London’s Great Orman Street Hospital, one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals. There he met his future wife, Ingeborg Hettwer and returned with her to Iran where he practiced as Associate Professor of Pediatrics in Shiraz. He was active in introducing modern medicine to rural communities in Iran as part of President Truman’s Point
Four Program, the first global US foreign aid program.
In 1956, Dr. Ghadimi left Iran with his family, having received a scholarship to attend a fellowship at Harvard University’s Children’s Hospital in Boston. He performed key research in the area of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism in Toronto, Canada at the Hospital of Sick Children’s Research Institute. Doctor Ghadimi also conducted research at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn where he became a professor of pediatrics. As the Director of Pediatrics at Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn, he pioneered the use of amino acid solutions to provide essential nutrition for extremely premature infants and was later awarded three patents for intravenous amino acid solutions he developed. His later career branched out into treating adults with metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity.
Dr. Ghadimi is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ingeborg, and his five children, Shahriar (Nooshin) Ghadimi of Tehran, Ramin (Dona) Ghadimi of Austin, Roya (Brian) Ghadimi of Naples, Rene’ (Beth) Ghadimi of Chicago, and Giselle (Ralph) Feraco of Naples; as well as his grandchildren Riana, Carl, Evan, Kaveh, Nayeli and Dominic.
Visitation will be on Saturday, September 2nd from
11:30 - 12:00 noon, followed by a funeral ceremony at 12:00 noon at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. Interment will take place immediately after the funeral at Palm Royale Cemetery on Vanderbilt Beach Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
