Julia Ann "Julie" Poppens, 80, of Naples, FL, died Monday, August 14, 2017, at Avow Hospice of Naples. Julie is survived by her husband, Arnold (Arny) Poppens; children, Jeri and Bill Preston, David and Carlene Sands, and Sharon and Greg Goodman; siblings, Roger Sweeting and fiancée Lily Jean Haddad, Gerald and Barbara Sweeting, Charles and Andrea Sweeting; and ten grandchildren.
Julie was born in Greenwich, OH, the oldest of four children, to George and LaDonna Sweeting. The family held education, church, and sports at its core; following these pursuits, she was a teacher, a member of several churches, and an avid volleyball player and golfer. Throughout her life, she lived in Norwalk and Cleveland, OH, as well as Jackson, MI, where she met Arny in 1981.
Together, they moved to Plainfield, IN, as Arny pursued his engineering career at Public Service Company of Indiana (PSI). Julie worked as an administrative assistant at a consulting engineering company and as a teller at the credit union at PSI.
Julie and Arny moved to Naples in 2002, from Indianapolis, to enjoy golf, bridge, and travel, serving as a Stephen Minister for 20 years in both Indiana and Florida, and gallivanting as a member of the Red Hat Society. Her favorite times were when family arrived for visits. Guests could always rely on a trip to the ocean and jaunts to several local sites of interest.
Julie’s faith was her bedrock. A funeral service will held Sunday, August 20, at 12:30p, following regular worship at North Naples United Methodist Church. Interment will take place at Ripley Cemetery, in Greenwich OH at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or to the North Naples Church Building Expansion Fund.
