To Professor Schran’s family and friends:
It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of my dear professor and thesis mentor at the University of Illinois. Professor Schran had a major impact on my decision to pursue economics as a profession after taking his highly regarded course in comparative economics. He was a knowledgeable and devoted teacher and he taught me a very important lesson about markets, namely, they do not work well unless they are embedded in a proper legal-institional framework. Subsequent events in the transition economies of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have more than borne out this lesson.
Professor Schran was also a friend of the family (my Dad remembers him fondly and misses running into him at the gym at Illinois) and he and his wife Tina attended my wedding to Cindy almost 35 years ago and signed our marriage certificate! On behalf of myself and my family, please accept my heartfelt and belated condolences. Miguel
