Philip DiTullio, age 84, passed away on Sunday, March 26, in Naples, FL, with his wife of 56 years, June (Horne) DiTullio by his side, and surrounded by a multitude of loved ones who had traveled from out of state to be with him in his final days.
Born in Weymouth, MA to Filoteo and Antoinetta DiTullio, Phil was a first generation American whose Italian heritage was revealed in his love of family and enthusiasm for big family gatherings with abundant food, laughter, song and hugs! And if some of the music at parties included songs by The Mills Brothers, he was certain to be singing along. He was skilled in the kitchen when it came to making desserts and “Phil’s Apple Pie Crust” and “Six-Layer Peppermint Chocolate Cake” are valued family recipes.
In addition to his wife, Phil is survived by his six children, Ellen George, Michelle (and Patrick) Crossen, Diane (and Andy) Brickley, David (and Lilla) DiTullio, Doreen (and Jim) Glendye, and Michael (and Trisha) DiTullio, plus 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his brothers Peter and Vinny DiTullio.
A career accountant, Phil was a 1956 graduate of Boston College. He retired in 1996 from the Massachusetts Turnpike where he had been Deputy Treasurer. He also served as Town Assessor for Weymouth and he provided tax preparation services.
Outside of work, Phil was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was a longtime member of South Shore Country Club where he developed lifelong friendships, playing in the regular weekend group. His golfing circle expanded when he moved to Naples and became a part of the Royal Wood community. Even when his participation was curtailed by physical limitations, he remained involved with the golfers, doing the pairings and distributing the weekly pot of winnings.
He and June were active card players, whether one-on-one in quiet games at home or in competitive group settings where Phil’s uncanny ability to recall what cards every other person was holding meant many wins for him and much frustration for his foes.
He also had a great touch on the bocce court. He and June competed in the Couples division, and separately, Phil had just won the spring 2017 Men’s championship! But perhaps his fondest activity was keeping abreast of the activities, performances and accomplishments of his grandchildren who made him so proud and filled him with such joy.
Services are being held at Fuller Funeral Home in Naples at 10:30 am Tuesday, March 28 with friends invited to gather for a remembrance celebration and Italian dinner at the Bloomfield pool. Another gathering will take place “up north” later this year.
