Susan Brailsford Gallagher

Susan Brailsford Gallagher has completed her journey and has now left us for better pastures. She was born in New Rochelle, New York on April 4, 1930 and left us on August 29, 2017. Her journey has been varied and rich. Susan grew up in New York and went to Pembroke College of Brown University and Mount Holyoke where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Zoology. She was a research assistant in the Department of Anatomy at Yale. Her life then took her to St. Petersburg, FL where she became interested in marine biology. Along with her work as a research assistant at both Eckerd College and the University of South Florida, she published several scientific papers. Susan later moved to Naples, FL where she continued her interest in horticulture, being a Master Gardener and a member of the Naples chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and the Fruit Growers Association. She was an expert in begonias. Susan was a firm supporter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and in early 1992 became involved with the creation of the Naples Botanical Garden, which she supported until the time of her passing. Susan died at home with her husband, Newton Davis, at her side and with the support of Avow Hospice Services. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Juanita Brailsford; her brother, Harrison Jr. (Buddy); and her first husband, John Gallagher. Susan's son, James Gallagher, and Newton's extended family grieve for her. Arrangements are by Fuller Funeral Home. No formal service will be conducted at this time. Family and friends will gather at a later date in remembrance of her life and many activities. Persons interested in sending memorials are urged to support the Naples Botanical Garden and NAMI.
