Bonnie Joan (Fuqua) Powell

September 13, 1927 ~ June 23, 2022 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

On Thursday, June 23, 2022, Bonnie Joan Powell, loving widow and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 94. Bonnie was born on September 13, 1927 in Brazil, Indiana to parents Ora and Maude Fuqua. On June 11, 1949, Bonnie was married to Phil Powell, also of Indiana. Together they raised two children, Gary and Rebecca.

Bonnie received degrees from the St. Anthony School of Nursing and Indiana State University. She was the Director of Nursing at Clay County Hospital in Brazil, Indiana for 15 years and the Director of Charter Hospital of Terre Haute for five years. She was passionate about the nursing field and was an active member of many professional organization. She received the Florence Nightingale Award from Indiana State University, an award granted to nurses who impact patient lives, elevate the profession, and inspire others.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister, Donnie Bray, as well as her siblings, Rosalind Monnett, Lola Parker, Helen Flowers, Dorothy Pinegar, Mary Fuqua, Lewis Fuqua, Ruth Fuqua, and Ivan Fuqua. She is survived by her children, Gary and Rebecca, her five grandchildren, Michael, Ryan, Jennifer, Phillip, and Katherine, and her six great-grandchildren, DJ, Mackenzie, Wendy, Daniel, Geoffrey, and Michael. 

Bonnie had the most tremendous love for her family, her greatest joy. She had a love of art, and together she and her husband Phil, who was himself an artist, traveled the world finding beauty and adventure. Bonnie was also quite the sentimental historian, creating many photo albums full of cherished adventures and family history and memories. In 1994, Phil and Bonnie moved to Florida, to be closer to family where she remained for the rest of her life. She enjoyed 59-years of marriage with her beloved Phil. Bonnie will be remembered for her kind spirit, her quick wit, her love of art, family and faith.  Bonnie was a friend to everyone she met and kept her active and adventurous spirit throughout her lifetime. She will be dearly missed.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. A funeral service will then take place at the funeral home at 11:00. Burial will follow at Palm Royale Cemetery.
