David Yoe Williams was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather during his incredible 91 years of life. Dad, a.k.a. GrandDad, passed on peacefully to his eternal reward in the early hours of April 21, 2022, at home in Naples, Florida. Dad is survived by his beautiful wife of 69 years - our mother, grandmother and great grandmother Charlotte. We love you and cherish you, Mom.
Dad was born and raised in Highland Park, Illinois, where he graduated from high school and met his bride-to-be, Charlotte Cleary. After high school, Dad was accepted to Knox College, and he subsequently transferred to and graduated from Georgetown University. While at Georgetown, Dad followed his deceased father-in-law’s deep desire that he convert to the Catholic faith. God bless you Grandfather Cleary for lighting that spark. Georgetown provided the base for Dad’s instruction in the faith where he soaked up as much as he could under private instruction. What then began was a lifelong pursuit of a deeper understanding and love for Christ and His Church. Dad’s faith informed everything he did.
Dad and Mom were married on June 27, 1953, shortly after Dad’s graduation, and after a 90-day stint in Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, Dad was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, serving for four years and being honorably discharged as a Lieutenant (JG) in 1956. By then, babies #1 and # 2 had arrived in 1954 and 1955. Following his military service, Dad launched a many decades-long and successful business career in financial services when he started as an analyst at the Continental Bank in Chicago. God’s blessings were abundant and babies #3 through #15 arrived in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1974. Dad was never afraid to start a new venture, whether in the US or abroad, or to take a leap of faith into a new job, and he was grateful that he was always able to provide for his family. Dad was pre-deceased by his parents, Bernice and Robert Williams’ and his three siblings Robert, Grace and his twin sister Mary.
Faith and family were everything to Dad.
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet he shall live.” There can be no doubt that Dad lived a life of faith and worked his entire life to pass that faith on to his family, including a deep devotion to our Blessed Mother under her many titles. The daily rosary was the centerpiece of our family life, always led by Dad, and that practice is firmly planted in his family. Dad can be sure that he will be remembered in our daily rosaries for decades to come.
“I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven…” Dad also passed on to his family his maxim that ‘we stand for life’, so it is fitting that we honor his ‘first principle’ by calling the roll of his descendants. And while his descendants are not quite yet as numerous as Abraham’s, buckle up because his legacy is vast.
Dad is survived by his fifteen children and their spouses: Charlotte Williams; Kathleen Hinkle; David Y. Williams II and his wife Laurie; Spencer Williams and his wife Loretta; Diane Galebach and her husband Stephen; Reverend Peter Williams; Margaret Pince and her husband David; Mary Vicinanzo and her husband David; Christopher Williams and his wife Janice; Patricia Blume and her husband Peter; Elizabeth Heisler and her husband Peter; Michael Williams; Joseph Williams and his wife Raeanna; Paul Williams; and Therese Williams.
Grandad is also survived by seventy-seven of his seventy-eight grandchildren and his ninety-six great grandchildren. [there are an additional 13 great grandchildren ‘on the way’ denoted by an *]
Each of us has been blessed by knowing, living with, loving, and being loved by Dad. We have been blessed by his example, by his virtue, by witnessing the times he fell and picked himself up to begin
again. By the times he picked us up when we fell, sharing our triumphs, our pains, and our failures as if they were his own. God blessed us with Dad. May he rest in well-earned eternal peace with Christ.
