Tribute

George Russell Tomlinson , 86, a resident of Lely  Palms in Naples, FL, passed away on Thursday April 9, 2020.  Born August 1, 1933 in Abington Hospital in Abington Pennsylvania son of  Frank and Ruth (nee Brown) Tomlinson.  

He was a graduate of Bensalem High School, Bensalem Pennsylvania, Class of 1952.  Drafted into the Army in September 1953, and after Combat Engineering Training, George volunteered to go to Korea.  After a year in Korea, he returned home and started working for U.S. Steel, where he worked for eleven years before changing careers and working for the State of Pennsylvania electrical facilities management.  He made Naples FL his new home in 1999.  

George was devoted husband. father and devout member of Lely Presbyterian Church.  He was also active in many fraternal organizations, Elks, Masons, Shriners, Florida’s Sheriff’s Association, American Legion and VFW. 

A very caring and loving person, he knew no strangers and was always available to help others in need.  This extended beyond the individual.  He was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the State of Florida for designing and installing a weather Early Warning System for Holiday Manor, a senior living community where he was living at that time.  Another activity he dearly loved, was dressing up as a Shriner Clown (Popsy) and making balloon animals for the children was a highlight in his life. 

As an Amateur Radio Operator Club, County Hunter, George traveled the USA with his wife making contacts from hard to work counties, making it possible for other county hunters to reach out to nearly 3700 elusive county contacts. 

George, call sign AA4GT, was honored by his fellow Amateur Radio Operators by a “Silent Key Service” and entered on the rolls as SK (Silent Key) meaning his radio is silent.  AA4GT’s list of friends spanned the globe and will be remembered for his laugh and generous nature for a long time.

Predeceased by his parents Frank and Ruth (nee Brown) Tomlinson. First wife MaryLou (Plate); his second wife Mary Louise (Esterbrook); stepsons Timothy McCoy and Richard Reed. Survivors are his stepsons William (Jacqueline) Reed, Step daughters Brenda (Gregory) Rozborski;  Marilee McCoy (Longstreet) Ryan; daughter-in - law, Norma McCoy Heller. Seven Grandchildren, and Six Great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Lely Presbyterian Church, St. Andrews Boulevard, Naples, FL 34113 in the future when the Covid-19 quarantine is lifted.
