December 2, 1914 ~ February 15, 2020 (age 105) 105 Years Old

Tribute

Helen Anastasia Sloan, 105 of Naples, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 15, 2020. Formerly of New Monmouth, NJ, she had been a Naples resident since 1972. She was born December 2, 1914 in West Orange, NJ, the daughter of John Henry and Ella May (née McDede) Dempsey.

Mrs. Sloan was a retired Registered Nurse, graduating from Bayonne Hospital School of Nursing in 1940.  She had a successful career in emergency and hospital nursing, as well as serving for many years as a school nurse in Monmouth County, NJ.  As a school nurse at Middletown High School, she also served as faculty advisor to the Future Nurses club, mentoring those with a calling to enter the nursing profession.

She and her husband, John, retired in 1972, moving to Naples to be with their only child and young grandchildren.  Several family members soon followed, creating a great family community of which Mrs. Sloan was always an active participant.

Mrs. Sloan, along with her husband, was a founding member of St. William Catholic Church in Naples.  She had been active in the parish’s Council of Catholic Women in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as participating in the Naples Women’s Club.   Mrs. Sloan enjoyed traveling for as long as she could, and lived the saying, “Once a nurse, always a nurse” by touting the joys of her profession to anyone she could.  She was devoted to her family, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time not only her immediate family, but with her extended family including her numerous nieces and nephews. In her later years, Mrs. Sloan enjoyed living at Terracina Grand.  She resided there for fifteen years prior to her death, and was a much-loved resident by both the staff and fellow residents.  The family would like to thank the nursing staff in particular for the excellent care provided to Mrs. Sloan.

Mrs. Sloan is survived by her loving daughter, Patricia (the late F. Edward) Resta of Naples, FL; two cherished grandchildren, Gregory (Anna) Behr of Windsor, CT and Jacqueline (Mark) Crews of Gainesville, FL; three treasured great grandchildren, Anthony Behr, Christina Behr and Matthew Crews; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John A. Sloan Jr. in 2008.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. William Catholic Church, 601 Seagate Drive, Naples. Entombment will follow at Naples Memorial Gardens.
