Roy Eidem, 96, slipped peacefully from this earthly life in his sleep at his Naples home in the early morning of January 2, 2019. He was born in Melrose Park, IL on November 15, 1922.
Roy is survived by his devoted wife Janet Eidem, nee Miller; his daughters Denise Eidem, Kristina Maria Young(Ken), Margaret Heaney(Brian), and his sons Roy William Eidem(Brenda), William Kelley Eidem, Robert Erik Eidem(Betsy), and Daniel Joseph Eidem(Marion); and many wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are Roy’s devoted nephew Ralph Eidem Jr., and niece Sharon Kay Eidem.
Roy graduated from Proviso High School in Oak Park, IL. He served 21 years in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of LTC. He performed his duties proudly in WWII in CBI and the European theater, in the Korean War, and served three tours of duty in Vietnam.
Under the GI Bill Roy studied nights at the U. of Maryland attaining a BS in Political Science, and at Catholic U. of America in Washington D.C attaining an MA and an advanced degree in Cultural Anthropology.
Roy worked for the Department of State in many areas of the world, during which time he discovered his beloved Assisi in Italy. He achieved Black Belt status in Judo while in Japan, and became a high level practitioner and teacher of TAI CHI. Roy belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He became a Third Order Franciscan in 1961, remaining in the order til death. Roy belonged to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church where, though frail he attended his last Mass on Christmas Eve 2018, at his insistence. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Seton at 11am. Donations in Roy’s memory may be made to St. Francis Breadline, 135 W. 31st ST, New York, NY 10001-3439.
