Tribute

James Francis Davies, 78, of Naples, Florida passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katie Davies (Naples) and their beloved cocker spaniel, Abby. Jim will be missed by his sister, Daryl Davies-Davis, and family (Penn Yan, NY), his son, Chris Davies, and family (Fremont, CA), and his daughter, Carrie Davies MacKay, and family (Littleton, MA). Papa Jim (Pop-pops!) adored his grandchildren, Laurel 14, Evan 13, and Maryanne 12, as well as his nieces and nephews, Adrienne, Schuyler, Jared, and Nicholas and his grandnieces, Frances and Alice.

Jim was born October 14, 1941 and grew up in East Rochester, NY. He attended East Rochester High School ‘59, Dartmouth College ‘63, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design ‘65. Remaining in the Cambridge area as an architect and city planner, Jim founded Architectural Resources Cambridge (ARC) and was a senior partner there for 40 years. He specialized in executing master plans and large projects for both corporate and academic campuses. Beautiful ARC designed buildings grace virtually every city and school in the north east to this day.

From a young age, Jim showed a fascination for design and how things worked. He was a true do-it-yourself fellow who was always excited to get to his next project. At fifteen he built his own hydroplane and later a dollhouse for his sister, Daryl. He loved classic cars and woodworking. In adulthood, he built an elaborate Victorian dollhouse for his daughter, Carrie, bunk beds for the kids, and an amazing VW Beetle-phone for Halloween.

In the late 60s, Jim and Katie settled in Carlisle/Concord, MA to raise their family. Jim pursued his love of sailing and maintained a boat in Boston harbor. He and Katie also played tennis regularly. Eventually, Jim became a devoted golfer. After retiring, he and Katie maintained a residence in Concord and forged lasting friendships at the Concord Country Club. They also established a winter residence in Naples, FL where they quickly became active members of the Wyndemere Country Club. They traveled the country and world connecting with family and friends, with Jim playing as many beautiful golf courses as he could find.

Jim Davies was one of the kindest, warmest, most generous people you could hope to meet. He and Katie made friends wherever they went. He was always the consummate host, making everyone feel welcome and included. He loved cooking huge weekend breakfasts that always included his trademark POPOVERS! Whether he was waiting at the 1st tee or examining the menu at his favorite restaurant, Jim loved striking up conversations with everyone around. He will be sorely missed by his dear friends up north, down south, and everywhere in between. Yet in our hearts, he will always be just a chip shot away.

Those who wish to support Jim’s memory are invited to contribute to these causes:
