John L. Norman, long-time Collier County resident, died suddenly on Saturday, April 21, at age 86. John was born and raised in Sarasota. His parents were the late Sarasota Police Chief Francis L. Scott and Mary Norman Scott. He graduated from Sarasota High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Navy flying many missions as a fighter pilot in the Korean War.
He was known throughout his life for his work in the radio broadcasting industry, coming to Naples in 1960 as news director of WNOG. During his career John also managed other radio stations in the Southeast. He was well known as a Naples commercial photographer and later as a legislative aide to three State of Florida Representatives: Ralph Arza, David Rivera, and Jeanette Nunez. Throughout his life he maintained a close affiliation with local law enforcement and early in his career served as a City of Sarasota police officer and agent of the Florida Beverage Department.
John spent many years in community service with such groups as the Rotary Club of Immokalee, Collier County Junior Deputy League, and Collier County Fruit Growers Council. He will also be remembered as the long-time race announcer and board of directors member of Swamp Buggy Days, Inc. He was the founding president of the Collier County Fair, an avid HAM radio enthusiast, and enjoyed growing tropical fruit trees.
He is survived by Tara Hime Norman, his wife of 41 years, a sister, Emma Greer of Bradenton, a step-daughter, and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 5, from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, 1625 Pine Ridge Rd., Naples with a memorial service following at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Collier County Junior Deputy League or the building fund of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Immokalee.
