On Sunday, April 18, 2021, Lloyd Gabourel passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. A former Harlem Globetrotter and veteran of the Merchant Marines and US Army, he is remembered most for his deep devotion to his family, his sharp wit, and the joy he brought to all who had the privilege of meeting him. Lloyd was a man of faith who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with those he loved. He always had a joke at the ready, and brought joy and laughter to every situation. As he was quick to remind his grandchildren, he would have been “turning 22 in June” (for the 76th time) this year.
Born June 17, 1923 in Brockton, MA to George and Mizille Gabourel, he served in the Merchant Marines from 1942-1946. Following his service, he was recruited by Abe Saperstein to join the Harlem Globetrotters in 1947, but his career with the Globetrotters was cut short, as he was called back into service in the US Army as a Sergeant Major in 1948, serving until 1951. He obtained his nursing degree in 1950, and spent his career working at the VA Hospitals in Brockton, MA and White River, VT before retiring to Naples, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lydia (Tourinho) Gabourel, and his 7 children: Elizabeth, George, Lloyd, Lynne, Lee, Leslie, and Lenny. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
