Mae L. Beck

Mae L. Beck, 92, of Roxbury and Naples, Florida died Tuesday, July 17 in her sleep at Avow Hospice in Naples. Mae was born in Buffalo, NY. She was predeceased by her parents Franklin F. and Lucy (Truckenport) Beck and her brother Franklin Beck. She is survived by her good friend and constant companion Helen Mamikonian. Mae attended Michigan State University, Smith College, and the Univ. of Pennsylvania where she earned a doctorate in organic chemistry. After working at DuPont and obtaining several important patents, she decided to pursue teaching, and took a position as professor of chemistry at Simmons College in Boston. During her tenure there, she studied art at the Museum School, the Cambridge Art Center and under Robert Douglas Hunter-a renowned Boston school painter. Mae's paintings have been exhibited throughout the northeast, Florida and Michigan. She was awarded the title "Copley Artist" from the Copley Society of Boston. Mae and Helen traveled and made friends all over the world, and hosted many exuberant get-togethers at their beloved Hardy Hill Farm. She will be missed by all.
