Mary Ellen (Barrett) Easterday


Mary Ellen Easterday passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2020 in Naples, Florida. She was 96. Born on January 17, 1924 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, she was the daughter of George H. Barrett and Marie Holloway Barrett.

Mary Ellen grew up in Fort Wayne and was a graduate of South Side High School. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. While at Indiana University she was a member of Pi Beta Phi and involved in a variety of campus organizations, as well as the effort to sell War Bonds. She met Edwin P. Easterday at Indiana University and, following his military service, they were married on November 30, 1946 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. They were happily married until his death in 1994.

Munster, Indiana was home to Mary Ellen for seventeen years. In Munster, she was involved in Community Theater, Junior Women’s Club and St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church. She also served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. While in Munster she had her four children: Margy Nebesio (Dan), Barry Easterday (Teresa Pardieck), Sheila O’Nan (John) and Tom Easterday (Deb Scott).

In 1963 the Easterday family moved to Seymour, Indiana.  In Seymour, along with being very involved in her children’s lives,  Mary Ellen was busy with Tri Kappa, teaching 4th grade at St. Ambrose Catholic School and later substitute teaching at St. Ambrose and in the Seymour public schools.

Mary Ellen and Ed retired to Naples, Florida nearly 30 years ago. Mary Ellen was very active at Lakewood Country Club, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club and Panhellenic as well as tutoring elementary students and volunteering at the Naples Community Hospital reception desk. Mary Ellen had resided at Lely Palms since 2010. She enjoyed many friendships while living there and served on a number of committees as well as leading a weekly prayer group.  She enjoyed socializing with friends, going on outings and playing cards. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Naples.

Mary Ellen was a truly loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and an inspiration to her family and friends. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a great granddaughter.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date and interment will be in the Columbarium at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Naples, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary Ellen’s memory may be made to the Mary Ellen Easterday Education Support Fund for St. Ambrose School at the Community Foundation of Jackson County (P.O. Box 1231, Seymour, IN 47274).
