Tribute

Peter Robert Metcalf passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday May, 13, 2019 at AVOW Hospice in Naples, FL.  “Big Pete” was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey on December 2, 1950, the son of Robert and Erna (Pelloth) Metcalf and graduated from Butler High School in Huntsville, Alabama in 1968. The next year he enlisted in the army and served in Vietnam. Once separated from the Army, Pete attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he met his wife, Pat, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant and Soil Science in 1976.

After having worked in various capacities on golf courses in Massachusetts and Vermont, Pete started his career as a golf course superintendent in 1982 at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, FL. as superintendent of the Copperhead Golf Course. He hosted two Florida Open and four U.S. Junior Championship tournaments while there. He oversaw course operations at Dunedin Country Club in Dunedin in 1986. Then, in 1987 Pete moved his family to Naples to oversee the construction of the golf course at the Vineyards Country Club.  During his ten years there, he hosted five Senior PGA Golf tournaments. In 1996, Pete earned accreditation as a GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent. He ended his career as a superintendent at Wyndemere Country Club in 2014 when he transitioned to semi-retirement as General Grounds Manager at Grey Oaks and then at Quail West until December 2016 when he retired.

Pete was an ardent Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing and hunting with his friends. Above all else, he was dedicated to his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Robert and Erna Metcalf.

Pete is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pat, their two children, Jesse (Jacquelyn) Metcalf and  Alecia Metcalf, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Metcalf, his brother Michael Metcalf, sisters Susan Valdez and Theresa (Wallace) Catanach, and brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill (Cindy) Leonard, Mary (Peter) Zagaeski, Cecilia Greenbaum, Martin (Diana) Leonard, Kathleen (Tim) White, John Cooney, Peter (Vicki) Leonard and Sean Leonard and many nieces and nephews.

Although ALS took his body, it never took his spirit.

Service will be held at AVOW Hospice in the ISPIRI Room on Saturday, June 8th, 2019.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11:00 a.m.
