Welcome to the memorial page for

Albert Laub

January 29, 1936 ~ March 24, 2017 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Al Laub, of Naples, FL and Boston, MA, passed away on the morning of March 24th in his home surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle against lung disease.

Born to Raymond and Margaret Laub in Amherst, NY, a suburb of Buffalo, Al was a graduate of the Nichols School and earned his BA degree from Harvard University.  He embarked on a forty-five year career in the investment securities world.  Starting first as a stock and bond broker Al became a co-founder of a new investment firm where he continued his retail business and began building an institutional department based on the firm’s research and trading capabilities. In the mid-seventies, Al was recruited by Cowen and Company to build its institutional equities business while managing all sales, marketing, and trading personnel.  By 1980, he became a General Partner of Cowen which specialized its research capabilities in high technology and healthcare for US institutions. In the mid-eighties, Al started the firm’s international division which led to the opening of new offices in London, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Tokyo, and Toronto.  The firm prospered throughout the 80’s and 90’s and eventually was purchased by a major French bank, Societe Generale.  Shortly after the sale in 1999, Al retired and became a resident of Naples after spending his adult life in Pittsburgh, and then, Boston and New York.

Al has been the loving husband of Gail for the past 33 years. He is the father of three children by his first wife – Susan O’Leary (Charlie) of Santa Fe, NM; Craig Laub (Elizabeth) of Marblehead, MA; and Eric Laub (Tammy) of S. Natick, MA; and the stepfather to Gail’s three children – Frank Masterson (Susan) of Palm City, FL; Laura O’Brien (Denis) of Portland, ME; and Robert Masterson (Deborah) of Toms River, NJ.  Al is the proud grandfather of eight super grandchildren – Caroline, Laura, Freddie, Nick, Joe, Mary, Victoria, and William.  He is survived by his sister and two brothers – Patricia Finck Laub of Tarpon Springs, FL; David Laub of Buffalo, NY; and Richard Laub (Donna) of Cumming, GA.

During his retirement years, Al’s interests and activities centered on golf, travel (55 countries), financial markets, boating, and reading.  He was involved for many years in a number of startup companies and charities.  As a member of The Moorings Presbyterian Church, he headed up the fundraising efforts that led to the building of their new Church.  Many of his best memories were a result of his membership at Royal Poinciana Golf Club where he had many friends, golf buddies, and social acquaintances.  For Al, RP was the place to be.  In closing, Al had a great retirement thanks in large part to his wife, Gail, who he considered his best friend and #1 supporter.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, April 4th at 11:00am at The Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive, Naples, FL 34103.  In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions are made to The Moorings Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund at 791 Harbour Drive, Naples, FL 34103.
