Welcome to the memorial page for

Fumihiko Shigehara

February 22, 1939 ~ September 14, 2017 (age 78) 78 Years Old
We are mourning the loss of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, but also celebrating a life well lived.

Fumihiko “Hiko” Shigehara passed away peacefully on September 14, 2017, after a quick but fierce battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Hiko was born in Tokyo, Japan on February 22, 1939. After surviving the wrath and aftermath of World War II, he excelled in school and graduated with honors from the prestigious Aoyama University.

His adventurous spirit led him to America in 1973, where he pursued a career in the travel industry. Hiko met his wife, Renate, in 1976, and shortly thereafter opened his own travel agency in Denver, Colorado. Years later, Hiko and Renate moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and then Naples, Florida, for their “golden years.”

Travel would always be part of Hiko's life. Together with his family, he visited every continent on the globe, numerous countries multiple times and cruised every ocean. This last year alone, he enjoyed snorkeling in the Maldives, hiking in Sri Lanka, sipping his scotch in Singapore and enjoying sushi in Japan.

We take comfort in knowing that Hiko lived his life fully to the very end. His gentle nature, kind spirit and unique sense of humor will be missed, but never forgotten.

No local memorial services are planned at this time. Hiko's family will take his ashes to Japan for a traditional Buddhist ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider a tax-deductible donation in his memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.donate.lls.org).
